It was less than ten years ago that Ryan Phillipe was pulling the strings in Cruel Intentions, but in light of his recent films, it seems like eons ago.
While ordinary people living far off the Hollywood radar tend to fantasize about the good fortune that would come with being ridiculously attractive and being able to parlay those good looks into a fruitful career as a big-screen leading man, there happen to be, at the same time, many strikingly handsome leading men within Hollywood who would gladly trade in their surface charms and massive paychecks for the chance to be taken seriously as actors. It may sound perverse, but for an actor serious about his craft, the challenge of establishing oneself as more than just a pretty face is not an obstacle to be scoffed at.
